Constant daytime sleepiness regardless of nightly sleep quality or duration. Sudden Muscle Tone Loss (Cataplexy): Strong emotions like laughing, surprise, or wrath cause brief muscle weakness or paralysis. Hallucinations and inability to move or talk upon waking or falling asleep are symptoms of sleep paralysis. Enormous, frightening sensory experiences that occur during sleep or wakefulness. Nighttime sleep disruptions, frequent nighttime awakenings, and vivid dreams or nightmares. These early symptoms may develop with time, requiring narcolepsy diagnosis and treatment.
